Yarema Malashchuk and Roman Khimei | RIBBON Studio

In this studio visit, filmmakers Yarema Malashchuk and Roman Khimei invite us into their practice at the intersection of documentary and fiction, sharing two works — Explosions Near the Museum and their recent commission Open World. In Open World, a single-channel video installation, a robotic dog—originally designed for military reconnaissance—is repurposed to allow a young Ukrainian refugee to virtually revisit his war-torn hometown. Through the robot’s eyes, he explores familiar streets, reconnects with friends and neighbours, and searches for the remnants of a life interrupted. Blurring the line between surveillance and intimacy, Open World meditates on exile, memory, and the emotional potential of technological mediation. Co-commissioned by RIBBON International, the work is a powerful reflection on loss, resilience, and return.
