Less than an hours' drive from Melbourne, the Macedon Ranges is best known for its beautiful forest trails on Mt Macedon. Families love the Sanatorium Lake trail and many naturalists explore Macedon Regional Park during the cool months for its amazing variety of funghis. Hikers often tackle the 30km Macedon Ranges Walking Trail circuit in Macedon Regional Park if they're looking for a fitness challenge. But the villages throughout the Macedon Ranges are also known for lovely short walks. Stroll along a waterway such as the Campaspe River Walk in Kyneton or Five Mile Creek in Woodend, or in the Malmsbury Botanic Gardens. There are a number of reserves in the area that are also home to endangered native flora and fauna, as well as an abundance of wildlife including kangaroos, wallabies, koalas and echidnas. Hanging Rock Reserve is one of the most iconic in the area, but lesser-known walks such as Black Hill Reserve in Kyneton are also a treat for nature lovers, hikers and families. And when you've finished your walk in the Macedon Ranges, there's plenty to see and do in the nearby villages.
