Who Will Sail the Ships? Fixing the Hidden Crisis in Global Seafaring

Seafarers First: Addressing Inequities in the Maritime Workforce Seafarers are the often-overlooked backbone of global trade. A life at sea may be attractive and far safer than at any time in human history. Yet even in the 21st century some challenges persist—from inequities in labour rights and pay, to poor working conditions. In addition, the industry is grappling with a growing talent crisis, as younger generations turn away from maritime careers. As global shipping becomes more digitised and sustainability-driven, there is an urgent need to place seafarers at the heart of maritime policy and investment. This panel will explore how policy, industry leadership, and skilling ecosystems can address the root causes of a shortage of talent, and once again make seafaring a respected, future-ready profession. Driving Questions: ● Are global labour standards, working hours, health cover and social protection, keeping pace with the evolving realities of being a worker in the modern maritime sector? ● As global shipping digitalises and decarbonises, is the sector preparing itself for a growing shortage of skilled and motivated seafarers? ● What policy and industry reforms are needed to make seafaring an attractive, dignified, and sustainable career choice for the next generation?
