Not many people are aware of the buried arc welding process so it is rarely seen in the industry. This is a shame because no other welding process can make 1-inch fillet welds in a single pass and penetrate 5/8" into the part. The process is limited to 1G and 1F welds on aluminum. Buried arc is also called high current density welding which is precisely what makes the technique work. High current and low voltage cause the arc to burrow deep beneath the surface. Buried arc is a variation on gas metal arc welding (GMAW). We use large wires ranging from 3/32 to 3/16" diameter. We use constant-current welding power supplies rather than the constant voltage machines typically used for GMAW. We set amperage and then control voltage by adjusting wire speed. We join a 3" thick aluminum plate in only 4 passes using 800 amps. We used Xiris Automation Inc. and high-speed cameras to shoot the video attached below in this episode of Weld of the Week. If your products are thick aluminum and you need large welds or deep penetration call me, we can help. Our lab is always available to test our technology on your parts. #robotclub #weldoftheweek
