I apologize for the delay in getting new lectures out. Our network went down for a week, but we are back up and running now. In this lecture we discuss the octet rule in heavier p-block elements. We discuss how the octet rule is still obeyed, even in hypervalent compounds, due to ion pairing and resonance. We discuss electronegativity and how to approximate it through both Pauling and Mulliken methods. We talk about dipole moments and calculating charge dispersion across polar bonds. We end chapters 1 and 2 by discussing molecular orbital theory of heteronuclear diatomic molecules and examining the orbital structure of some compounds.
