Good day! :D Holding the distinction of being the first widespread large diesel locomotive employed in Britain, the English Electric Type 4, later known as the Class 40, was an initial attempt to match the power of some of the most renowned steam engines of its era under the requirements of the Modernisation Plan, the results being somewhat unfortunate, as due to it being heavily over-engineered for its task, this class of locomotive suffered numerous early faults and design flaws that would make it something of an embarrassment for British Rail, and despite it holding a mixed reception today among enthusiasts, the Class 40s did ultimately carve out a niche for themselves in the realm of freight traffic, serving dutifully until their eventual withdrawal in the 1980s.
