The cassette tape recording in the Society’s archive was titled ‘THE XHOSA CATTLE KILLING’ which subject was directly related to the recent publication of his book titled 'The Dead Will Arise: Nongqawuse and the Great Xhosa Cattle-Killing Movement of 1856–7'. A new introduction to the archived talk was prepared and recorded by Mike Kenyon, a historian and member of the Society, based in East London in November 2025. ---------------------------- Who is Jeff Peires? Jeffrey Brian Peires was born in Cape Town, South Africa and studied history at the University of Cape Town and subsequently at the University of Wisconsin–Madison from 1972 to 1975. His academic work largely concerns the history and historiography of the Xhosa people in the Cape. His book about the Xhosa cattle-killing movement ‘The Dead Will Arise: Nongqawuse and the Great Xhosa Cattle-Killing Movement of 1856–7’, was first published by Jonathan Ball in 1989. Peires' interpretation of the causes of the cattle-moving movement drew extensively on Xhosa sources. The book emphasised the role of Nongqawuse's prophecies and won the Alan Paton Award for non-fiction in 1990. In South Africa's first democratic election in 1994 Peires was elected to represent the African National Congress in the National Assembly of the South African Parliament. He resigned from his seat before the end of the legislative term. He later worked in the Eastern Cape Provincial Government. As of 2022, Peires was emeritus Professor of History at the University of Fort Hare in the Eastern Cape. ---------------------------- The original recording was expertly digitized by VNG Dubbing of Cape Town in September 2025. ---------------------------- The image used as an illustration is the cover of 'The Dead Will Arise: Nongqawuse and the Great Xhosa Cattle-Killing Movement of 1856–7' by Jeff Peires, published by Ravan Press (Pty) Ltd of Johannesburg in 1989.
