DREAM LOVER, Dion & The Del-Satins, (Laurie LP #2009) 1961 Here is another really great cover version from our music collection. Dion Francis DiMucci, (better known as ‘Dion’) is an American singer and songwriter who was born in the Bronx, New York on July 18, 1939. His music incorporates elements of doowop, pop, rock, R&B, folk, and blues. Dion embarked on a solo career and was one of the most prominent rock and roll performers of the pre-British Invasion era. He had 32 hits in the late 1950s and early 1960s as a solo performer, or with The Belmonts and The Del-Satins. He is best remembered for his signature hit songs "RUNAROUND SUE", "THE WANDERER", "RUBY BABY" and "LOVERS WHO WANDER", among others. Dion & The Belmonts had 9 songs charted nationally on Billboard, their biggest was “WHERE OR WHEN” (Laurie #3044) which charted in February 1960 for 16 weeks and reached #3. Their second biggest song considered one of the national anthems of doowop was “A TEENAGER IN LOVE” (Laurie #3027). It charted nationally in May 1959 for 15 weeks and reached #5. Dion’s early roots were with a group called The Timberlanes. He later sang with The Belmonts, The Wanderers, The Little Kings and The Del-Satins. Dion as a solo artist had 23 songs charted nationally on Billboard. His biggest was “RUNAROUND SUE” (Laurie #3110) which charted in October 1961 for 14 weeks and reached #1. It stayed #1 for 2 weeks. A giant hit song for him! Dion’s bio info, TV and venue appearances are much too much to capture with this upload. It would take pages and pages! We’ve only touched the surface with his musical accomplishments! “DREAM LOVER” (Atco #6140) was a giant hit for the late “GREAT” Bobby Darin. His version charted in June 1959 for 17 weeks and reached #2. It stayed #2 for 2 weeks. Bobby Darin is credited with writing “DREAM LOVER”. Del-Satins’ group members singing with Dion on this “FABULOUS” cover version of “DREAM LOVER” are Stan Zizka, Les Cauchi, Fred Ferrara, his brother Tom Ferrara (who would later join The Capris) and Keith Koestner. I’m dedicating this upload to the late Les Cauchi and Fred Ferrara. After leaving The Del-Satins, both joined up with the late Johnny Maestro and became original members of The Brooklyn Bridge. They were all very dear friends of mine. I produced the group many times. They are all sadly missed! Please note: Regarding our Mint and Pop channels: I decided quite a while ago to upload many album cuts. Back in the day, the DJ’s were not playing album cuts so the public was cheated out of a lot of “GREAT” music that they never heard. Stay tuned, many more on the way! Enjoy this really great cover version of “DREAM LOVER” by Dion & The Del-Satins. Dion is still with us, he will turn 87 years old this July 18, 2026, WOW!
