YOU MUST TRY, The Swallows, (Rare) (Guyden #2023) 1959 Flipside: HOW LONG MUST A FOOL GO ON - Here is another really great unknown ballad from our music collection. The Swallows (aka The Guides, aka The Senders, aka The Uptones) hailed from Los Angeles CA. Group members were Carlton Beck (lead), Harry Binns, Richard Betts, Jackie “Eugene” Ware and Raymond Washington. Please note: There is no connection with this Swallows group to The Swallows group from Baltimore MD. who recorded for King Records! In 1959 The Swallows recorded this upload of “YOU MUST TRY" and the flipside “HOW LONG MUST A FOOL GO ON”. There was a legal issue challenging Guyden's use of the name The Swallows because of The Swallows group from Baltimore. So, Guyden Records changed the group's name to "The Guides" and pressed new copies with the change. That same year, the group changed their name to The Senders. In 1959 as The Senders, they recorded “I DREAM OF YOU” (Kent #320) written and produced by George Motola. (It’s uploaded on our channel). Motola is probably best known for co-writing Jesse Belvin's “GOODNIGHT MY LOVE”. George Motola also co-owned Empire Records and owned Troy Records. He had over 120 songs published by BMI. Motola has written and produced for many Los Angeles vocal groups (The Turks, The Tempters, The Preludes just to name a few.) He did most of his co-writing with his wife, Ricki Page, who also had her own successful singing career. The flipside of “YOU MUST TRY”, “HOW LONG MUST A FOOL GO ON”, was written by George Motola and his wife Ricki Page! It’s uploaded on our channel! The Senders epitomized the Southern California vocal group sound of the late 1950’s and early 1960’s. With some personnel changes, group member Richard Betts would later record as The Uptones for Lute and Magnum Record labels in 1962-63. In 1962 lead singer Carlton Beck recorded “THE GIRL I LEFT BEHIND” for George Motola’s Troy Record label with The Hollywood Saxons’ members Stan Beverly, Charles Taggart, and Maudice Giles. 25 years ago, the record on (Troy #100) was valued at $800.00. Just a little West Coast history! “YOU MUST TRY” sounds a lot like “IN THE STILL OF THE NIGHT” by The Five Satins. Enjoy this “GREAT” unknown ballad “YOU MUST TRY” by The Swallows with Carlton Beck singing lead! This is West Coast Doowop at its finest!
