When the Prophet ﷺ arrived in Madinah, he did not only build a masjid. He built a family. In this Ramadan reflection from the Making of an Ummah series, we explore one of the most remarkable moments in the history of Islam: the establishment of brotherhood between the Muhajirun and the Ansar. The Muslims who migrated from Makkah left behind their homes, wealth, businesses, and families. They arrived in Madinah with almost nothing. The Prophet ﷺ responded with a revolutionary step: he paired every migrant with a member of the Ansar as brothers. This was not symbolic brotherhood. They shared wealth, homes, and livelihoods. For a period they even inherited from one another. Through the Qur’an and the stories of the companions, we discover that the Ummah was not built by institutions alone. It was built when believers learned to carry one another. Allah describes the Ansar in Surah al-Hashr: وَالَّذِينَ تَبَوَّؤُوا الدَّارَ وَالْإِيمَانَ مِن قَبْلِهِمْ يُحِبُّونَ مَنْ هَاجَرَ إِلَيْهِمْ وَلَا يَجِدُونَ فِي صُدُورِهِمْ حَاجَةً مِّمَّا أُوتُوا وَيُؤْثِرُونَ عَلَىٰ أَنفُسِهِمْ وَلَوْ كَانَ بِهِمْ خَصَاصَةٌ “Those who settled in Madinah before them and embraced faith love those who migrated to them. They find no resentment in their hearts for what they were given, and they prefer others over themselves even though they themselves are in need.” (Surah al-Hashr 59:9) This talk reflects on the meaning of true brotherhood, the challenge of overcoming selfishness, and how we can revive the spirit of the Ansar in our own communities today. The Prophet ﷺ did not only build a mosque in Madinah. He built a family. ⸻ Timestamps (Chapters) 00:00 Introduction 00:10 The Prophet ﷺ Building the Ummah in Madinah 00:38 The Masjid Was Only the Beginning 01:06 The Ummah Is Built When Believers Carry One Another 01:34 The Muhajirun Arrive in Madinah as Refugees 02:30 The Prophet ﷺ Establishes Brotherhood 03:40 Breaking Tribal and Social Divisions 04:55 The Qur’an Describes the Ansar 05:45 The Battle Against Selfishness in the Human Soul 07:30 The Story of Sa’d ibn Rabi’ and ’Abd al-Rahman ibn ’Awf 09:45 The Prophet ﷺ Built a Family, Not Just a Mosque 10:30 Reviving Brotherhood in Our Communities
