As part of the EUniWell Social Talks seminar series “Fighting Discrimination in Europe”, Prof. Gerald Schneider spoke on the topic “The dark side of German federalism: How regional immigration attitudes lead to administrative discrimination” on 28 January 2025. Lecturer: Prof. Gerald Schneider, Professor of International Politics, University of Konstanz Related EUniWell Arena: 2) Social Equality & Well-Being About this lecture: Many countries face the problem that the preferences of the population vary greatly from region to region. Federalism is often praised as the ideal solution for how a community should deal with this heterogeneity. However, a dark side of this institutional arrangement is the unequal treatment of people with a migratory background in local administrations and regional courts. The talk presents a theoretical framework to explain how the local anti-immigration mood and other extra-legal factors contribute to the discriminatory decisions of administrators and judges within a federal context. The lecture introduces novel evidence on administrative inequality in German administrative and judicial decision-making on asylum, citizenship, and unemployment benefits. This lecture is part of the EUniWell Open Lecture Series. Find the full programme here: https://www.euniwell.eu/what-we-offer...
