DIY angle sensor. The course titled Control System Design – A First Look (MITx – 6.302.0x Started 01/Jan/2016, https://www.edx.org/course/introducti...) requires the purchase of the Lab kit which includes the magnepot 6127V1A360L.5FS - a non-contacting Hall effect single turn position sensor. This sensor is rather expensive and availability is limited. I would like to report a DIY angle sensor made from paper, pencil, a few screws, cat's whisker wire and a few lego bricks. The resistive patch was simply drawn using 6B pencil (Staedtler, Germany) but probably any soft pencil will work. It forms an almost complete circle with a diameter of 4.5 cm and patch width of0.5cm. The resistive patch was drawn three times and finally was ironed at 170 degrees of Celsius for 3 minutes through a clean sheet of paper by an ordinary domestic iron. Ironing produces a smooth surface of the resistive patch. The measured resistance is about 20KOhm. A piece of paper containing a resistive patch is next attached to the plastic plate to achieve rigidity. The rotating arm was built from Lego bricks but this can be replaced by any available materials. The crucial element is cat's whisker wire which works as a potentiometer wiper. It was made from 0.2mm steel wire (precision metal spring). To allow soldering, a tight coil of uninsulated copper wire was wrapped around steel wire. The shape of the wiper electrode should provide robust contact with minimal friction – this required some patience but can be achieved by trial and error. Screw terminals are made at the ends of the resistive patch. One was connected to +5V and another to ground. The flexible insulated wire was connected to the wiper. Assembled angle sensor range is more than 300 degrees with 1 – 4V outputs. The movement is smooth and friction comparable or even less than magnepot 6127V1A360L.5FS.
