This video is a demonstration of how to conduct an unstructured intimate partner violence risk assessment in an addiction recovery setting. The social worker in this recording is Dr. Amar Ghelani, Assistant Professor (Teaching Stream) with the University of Toronto Factor-Inwentash Faculty of Social Work. The simulated client is Abby, a 25 year old straight, cis gender female who lives with an abusive partner and presents with substance use disorder (meth, alcohol, cannabis). This is her first meeting with Amar, who works in an addiction assessment and referral service that offers virtual appointments. At this point in the recording, Abby just completed an addiction assessment where she mentioned that she usually consumes meth and alcohol with her boyfriend. Amar asks Abby a series of questions in an unstructured manner to understand her relationship with her partner and the danger she may be in.
