A More Efficient Panel Method: Rapid Descriptive Analysis with Reaction-Timed Response

There is a need for faster and cheaper descriptive analysis methods, cheaper for clients (especially for high volume testing) and to use less panel time. Implicit testing measures such as reaction-time testing, a relatively cheap and quick methodology, has successfully been used to uncover consumer perceptions, where quicker responses suggest stronger semantic associations between stimuli (brands, products, sensory experiences) and concepts. Spectrum trained panelists, with a high degree of training and expertise, can evaluate products with some degree of intuition and automatism, prompting interest to explore the possibility for adding reaction-time to descriptive panel evaluations, addressing the need for a faster and cheaper screening tool. Results provide preliminary support that reaction-time testing could be used as a screening tool. With the reaction-time procedure, panelists were able to test more samples in a shorter period than traditional tools. Our results provide preliminary evidence that reaction-timed responses from trained panelists can differentiate samples and provide valuable data.
