It’s Cristy Lee with Driveline Forensics. Topic: Steer Axle Maintenance Inspection NEVER grease a steer axle before you take knuckle or tie rod endplay readings. Watch video for complete instructions. Prep: • Set parking brake, chock drive wheels, jack up front of vehicle, put jack stands under each side of the steer beam, take wheels off Inspection: • Check axle beam for bends, cracks, gouges, dents • Check mounting hardware/steering connections for loose/missing pieces • Make sure steering axle stop bolts are intact • Check knuckle thrust bearings • Check cross tube for bends, cracks, gouges • Boot should cover ball joint of the tie rod end • If boots or seals are damaged, replace both of the tie rod ends • Tie rod nut should be tight, cotter pin should be intact • Make sure the threaded portions of each tie rod end are completely inserted into the cross tube split • Make sure all of the Zerk fittings are correctly installed • Rotate cross tube toward vehicle front, then vehicle rear • If it does not rotate in both directions, replace both tie rod ends • Check vertical knuckle endplay • Check the tie rod endplay • Check kingpin bushing endplay #DrivelineForensics
