Did you know that sea sponges, such as Lissodendoryx florida may contain molecules that can be used to develop new pharmaceuticals? A group of scientists at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) recently uncovered a way to set up a reaction to produce a stable form of lissodendoric acid A, a molecule derived from sea sponges. This reaction involves the use of strained cyclic allenes, a form of unstable ring structures. For many years, strained cyclic allenes were not commonly used in chemical reactions since they may be difficult to control. This discovery can be useful, as the preliminary research suggests that lissodendoric acid A could play a role in developing pharmaceuticals. This video covers some basic concepts in organic chemistry and explores the current research on lissodendoric acid A, including how it was synthesized in the lab and the potential it may have in the future in enhancing human health.
