Enzymes are biological catalysts, and they speed up chemical reactions without altering the thermodynamics of said reactions. They do this, specifically, by lowering the activation energy of a reaction, and they lower the activation energy of a reaction by stabilizing the transition state, the high-energy intermediate of a reaction that exists between reactants and products. Enzymes bind their substrates at a site called the active site, which is very specific as to what it binds to.
