Approximately one year back, we got a request from Vidushi Smt Aruna Raghunathan to uplpad this varnam as notated in SSP. It was taken as a divine order from Subbarama Diskhitar himself and adequate effort was taken to learn the same. This learning process made ua to realise the imprtance the varnas composed and notated by SuRa are really vital in understamding the raga svarupa of the ragas. We personally thank Vidushi for giving an oppprtunity to learnsuch rare and exquisite works lost to the eternity. Listening to the archaic compositions, especially in the ragas like Balahamsa, natanarayani, isamanohari, sankarabharanam, etc make us to speculate that ragas could have also had inherent tempo in the past! The compositions in this raga Balahamsa are always in the fast tempo, at least if we adhere to the old and lost tradition. This varna, composed by SuRa on Sri Baskara Sethupathi of Ramanathapuram Zamin is of no exception. Like other varnas of Subbarama Dikshitar, this also has a sarva laghu citta svaram, a citta svara with a phrase repeating itself several times (a style adopted from Sri Muthusvami Dikshitar), anubandha after the citta svaras and needless to say, a citta svara employing plenty of anuprasam. This must be one of the few compositions with three mudras, poshaka ('bhaskara sethupati'), vaggeyakkara mudra ('guruguha') and deiva mudra (raja rajesvari). This is a genuine attempt to interpret the notation given in Sangita Sampradaya Pradarsini, written by Sri Subbarama Dikshithar to the best of the abilities of the presenter. This version is purely baroque and a comparison with the present version impedes listening pleasure.
