It’s mid-February in Eastern Oklahoma, and while most people are still waiting for spring, we’re already hitting the ground running on our 10-acre off-grid homestead. In this video, I’m sharing why starting your garden cleanup and soil prep now is the secret to a successful growing season. From fixing compacted soil in my raised beds to managing the "help" from our free-ranging chickens, there is a lot to do before the spring rains finally arrive. We’re working on: Soil Amendment: Adding manure and leaf mulch to prep for planting. Chicken Management: Keeping the girls away from the cilantro and garlic! Perennial Care: Checking on the budding blackberries and elderberries. Infrastructure: Planning new cages for the strawberries and fruit bushes. Gardening in Oklahoma can be unpredictable, but getting a head start on a 70° February day makes all the difference. Whether you're off-grid, homesteading, or just want a better backyard garden this year, don't wait for the calendar to tell you when to start!
