Do You Want To See A Miracle | John

When evening came, his disciples went down to the sea, got into a boat, and started across the sea to Capernaum. It was now dark, and Jesus had not yet come to them. The sea became rough because a strong wind was blowing. When they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus walking on the sea and coming near the boat, and they were frightened. But he said to them, “It is I; do not be afraid.” Then they were glad to take him into the boat, and immediately the boat was at the land to which they were going. — John 6:16-21 When I get to heaven, there are people I want to talk to. And the men on this boat are a few. This moment is spectacular. In other Gospels, we get a little more detail than here. Even so, as we read John's Gospel, we discover the escalation of Jesus's display of power. Jesus has already demonstrated he has power over so many things. Power over chemical compounds like water, which he can reorder and reorient into a new compound of excellent wine. Power over the human body from which he can remove illness and restore muscular strength from diseases that kill and disable people. Power over energy provided by food which he can supply in endless amounts from a random boy's tiny basket to thousands upon thousands of people. And in this moment from our text today... Power over the unseen force of nature, massive amounts of water, time, and space as they instantly appear at their destination. This is crazy stuff. Yet I have discovered in my three decades of following Jesus you can see all these things even today. You don't have to wait till heaven to understand and see them. But here's the deal. If you want to see them, you must do two things. First, you will have to walk with Jesus for a while because, over time, he will open your eyes and increase your spiritual awareness. You always see more of his incredible power the longer the Spirit leads you. Second, you will have to come to the end of your wisdom, strength, and ability. Often when we are at the end of ourselves, we see Jesus most clearly. So far, all the people who received a miracle in this book were at the end of all natural resources. At the wedding in Cana, the family is poor, and the wine is spent, and they have no money to replenish the supply. The official's son was lying at death's door with no hope for healing. The invalid born lame could not walk his whole life; Jesus was his last hope. The 5000 were hungry, with nowhere to go and no money to purchase the food they needed. And the men on the boat here? Seven of them were experienced fishermen who navigated this lake their whole life, yet they were exhausted. And when do all these people see the miracle-working power of Jesus? When they can no longer do it themselves. When only Jesus can. So if you want to see a miracle, commit to walking with Jesus for a long time, and don't turn from him when you are at the point of exhaustion. Turn toward him. I bet you see a miracle. ASK THIS: What kind of miracle do you need today? DO THIS: Turn to Jesus for the miracle you need. PRAY THIS: God, I need a miracle, and you are the only one who can do it. PLAY THIS: Miracles.
