Smirna Kulenović (BA) "The Alchemy of Fear" A performative lecture-ritual where Smirna Kulenović transmutes the residues of fear embedded in Balkan landscapes through storytelling, singing, herbalism, clay, and sensory participation — revealing the body as an alchemical instrument of knowing and remembrance. By ingesting healing clay gathered from Bosnian territories marked by genocide, she opens a dialogue with the mineral memory of the earth, where soil becomes both witness and teacher, and digestion becomes a form of listening. In “The Alchemy of Fear” Kulenović proposes a feminist poetics of transformation that refuses the extractive logic of research and instead turns toward absorption, reciprocity, and metabolic relation. Here, fear ferments within the body — through the slowness of ritual, the tactility of matter, and the intimacy of storytelling — as an embodied method for sensing what the land still remembers. ____________________ bal conference 2025 Date: November 6 Location: FLUX 1, Vordere Zollamtsstraße 7, Floor 3 University of Applied Arts Vienna Speakers: Agnė Bagdžiūnaitė, Jelisaveta Rapaić, Pille-Riin Jaik, Smirna Kulenović, God’s Entertainment Moderators: Lara Mejač, Magdalena Kozlovskaja Organisers: Improper Walls & LT.art Vienna bal is a transdisciplinary comparative collaboration project delving into the realms of art and culture in the Baltics and the Balkans.
