After a blow-out win against Boston on the road and then a win in a close game against St Louis at home, the Stars were in Detroit to play the 2nd-ranked Red Wings in Game 39. The 1st period was a back-and-forth affair with Dallas getting more chances than Detroit. The Stars opened the scoring about 6 minutes in. Mike Modano went top-glove on the backhand from the edge of the circle at the hashes beating Mike Vernon off a pass from Derian Hatcher. The Detroit goalie was hindered by his defense on the play. Despite good pressure the next goal didn't come until about 5-and-a-half minutes to go. This time it was Dave Gagner going top-glove short-handed from between the hashes off pass from Mike Modano. That made it 2-0 for Dallas. Detroit got one back in the dying seconds of the 1st period though. Dino Ciccarelli earned credit for a Dallas own-goal with good pressure around the net when the rebound from his shot was skated in to the net by Mike Modano. The score was 2-1 for Dallas at the break and shots were DAL 17 and DET 11. Dallas scored early in the 2nd to get that goal back when Dave Gagner beat Mike Vernon top-blocker-side from the edge of the circle off a pass from Mike Modano. Detroit replied less than 2 minutes later to narrow the gap again. Vyacheslav Kozlov took a nice feed from Paul Coffey, took the shot, got his own rebound and tucked it in past a sprawling Andy Moog. Dave Gagner finished off his hat-trick with another nice top-blocker-side shot past mike Vernon right at the mid-point of the 2nd period. Things settled down until late in the 2nd period when Dallas exerted hard pressure. The Stars took advantage of the advantage on a powerplay when Trent Klatt went top-glove on the powerplay from the face-off circle off a pass from Kevin Hatcher with just over 2 minutes to go. Then just 59 seconds later Mike Modano had half-a-net to shoot at after a great pass across the front from Dave Gagner at the bottom of the circle. The Stars had the lead 6-2 at the 2nd intermission and the shots were DAL 32 and DET 21. The Red Wings started strong in the 3rd period and Dino Ciccarelli scored his second goal of the night 5-and-a-half minutes in beating Andy Moog on a breakaway after a pass to the wing by Sergei Federov. With thirteen minutes to go Mike Modano completed his hat-trick going top-glove with a blind backhander off a pass from Dave Gagner from corner of the circle to make the score 7-3. That was enough for Mike Vernon and he left the game and was replaced by Chris Osgood. The Red Wings defense stiffened after that and Dallas didn't get many shots on Osgood until about 5-and-a-half minutes to go. Mike Modano scored from the side of the net beating Chris Osgood glove-side tight to post after great work by Trent Klatt and Dave Gagner. Klatt fed Gagner for a one-timer in front but it didn't click but Gagner spotted Modano at the side of the net and fed a quick pass that Modano put away. Coach welcomed Osgood to the party. Dallas finished the scoring with Mike Modano's fifth goal of the game with 3-and-a-half minutes left. Modano beat Osgood top-glove with a boomer from the slot off a pass from Kevin Hatcher. The final score was 9-3 for Dallas and the shots were DAL 41 and DET 32. Enjoy!
