Ep. 403 - We're second-guessing our travel plans! Driving the Pacific Coast Highway along the California Coast from Point Arena to Sausalito sounded perfect — lighthouses, rugged cliffs, famous landmarks, and film locations. But throw in thick fog, ridiculously windy roads, work, and tight schedules and the trip quickly became more intense than we expected and a little disappointing. In this episode we show the highlights and the hard parts of California coast van life — the breathtaking scenery and the behind-the-scenes reality of long days, foggy viewpoints, the challenge to balance work and travel —and ultimately some travel fatigue that began to set in. 📍 LOCATIONS FEATURED IN THIS EPISODE: Point Arena Lighthouse: stands dramatically on the Mendocino Coast, marking the westernmost point in the state and guiding ships past this rugged shoreline since the early 20th century. The current tower was completed in 1908 after an earthquake damaged the original structure. Its striking height and location make it one of the most prominent lighthouses on the Pacific coast. Point Arena–Stornetta Public Lands & Sea Lion Rocks: a vast area that showcases some of the most dramatic coastal scenery in this section of coast. Sweeping bluffs, wildflower-dotted headlands, offshore sea stacks, and crashing surf define this protected stetch of shoreline, where coastal trails wind along the cliff edges with nonstop ocean views. Just offshore, the rugged offshore formations, Sea Lion Rocks, are often home to noisy gatherings of sea lions and seabirds resting between waves. This windswept area offers a striking mix of wildlife watching, geology, and wide-open coastal vistas that feel both remote and wonderfully untamed. Goat Rock Beach (Jenner, CA): a striking stretch of coastline near Jenner in Sonoma County, California, where the Russian River meets the Pacific Ocean amid dramatic rock formations and broad sandy shores. Named for a prominent offshore sea stack, the beach is known for its sweeping views, rolling surf, and frequent wildlife sightings, including harbor seals resting on nearby sandbars. Goat Rock Beach has been used as a film location, most notably in the 1985 cult classic The Goonies. Bodega Bay, CA Point Reyes National Seashore: A wild and windswept peninsula known for its dramatic coastal cliffs, open grasslands, dense forests, and abundant wildlife. Shaped by powerful ocean forces and the nearby San Andreas Fault, it offers a striking blend of natural beauty and geologic intrigue that makes it one of the most distinctive coastal landscapes in the state. Highlights here include the Cypress Tree Tunnel and Point Reyes Lighthouse.
