In a waterfront town with an extensive history, it's an oddity no one wants to discuss. Bellingham, a city with a rich history and known as the former home of D.C. sniper John Allen Muhammad, is once again in the spotlight. This time, a resident, 29-year-old Afghan national Rahmanullah Lakanwal, is accused of traveling to Washington, D.C., and committing a series of shootings that critically injured one National Guard member and killed another in a suspected terror attack. Lakanwal reportedly lived at a Bellingham apartment complex with his wife and five children, and came to the USA in 2021 as part of Operation Allies Welcome. Whatcom County has been a welcoming place for Afghan refugees, with nearly 400 individuals resettled during Operation Allies Welcome. Operation Allies Welcome is the U.S. federal government initiative launched in August 2021 to support the relocation, resettlement, and integration of Afghans who were evacuated during and after the fall of Kabul. OAW was created to coordinate the safe arrival, temporary housing, medical screening, and resettlement of Afghan nationals who: -Assisted the U.S. military and government, -Were at risk under Taliban rule, -Or otherwise qualified for humanitarian protection. The situation in Bellingham is complex and has left the community grappling with the news. World Relief of Whatcom County expressed pride in the community's efforts, with multiple churches providing food and housing support. The Washington Department of Social and Health Services reported that thousands of Afghan refugees sought humanitarian relief in 2022, with hundreds more arriving in recent years. A board member of Afghan Advantage, an organization dedicated to empowering and educating local refugees, described the shooting allegations as "heinous" and said the community is "heartbroken." The board member emphasized the gratitude Afghan allies and their families feel towards the U.S., noting their appreciation for the safety and educational opportunities available to their children, particularly daughters. -------------------------------------------------- For more on the story: https://komonews.com/news/local/wa-or... _______________ Stay up to date with our social media: KOMO News on Facebook: / komonews KOMO News on Twitter: / komonews KOMO News on Instagram: / komo4 KOMO News on TikTok: / komo4seattle Subscribe to KOMO on YouTube: / @komonews Watch more top local news stories: • Видео For all of the day’s top local and national news, visit http://www.komonews.com/ Watch our live newscasts and other live video at https://komonews.com/watch Download our iOS App: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/komo-...
