Today's episode will help you hear the difference between roundwound and flatwound when the guitar is played acoustically ! For those who'd like to hear the difference plugged in, you may refer to AS#69 "Donna Lee". I'm playing half a chart of Out of Nowhere (the great standard composed by Johnny Green in 1931) on the roundwound then i switch for the flats. As i'm playing 2 charts you get to hear each type of strings twice. Sorry for the little change in tempo, i didn't memorize the tempo and it took me some time to change the strings and didn't listen to the previous take etc. Also try to compare more the difference in tone, since it's harder to compare the volume because i may dig harder sometimes etc. The guitar used in this test is a 1953 Levin Solist i bought during a tour in Sweden with Gustav Lundgren and Antoine Boyer (if you don't know them, please check them out !! KILLER PLAYERS). I'm playing a Dunlop 1.5mm purple pick, and the nickel strings are : -ROUND : D'addario gauge 13 -FLAT : Thomastik gauge 12 I know that to be 100% fair it should be the same gauge. Please share your opinion in the comments. I personnally think that the nickel round strings give a little brighter attack where the flats can be a bit more muddy ! As i like the acoustic archtop bright and clear i'll tend to prefer the roundwound strings (when played acoustically). I like to have my collection evolve so don't hesitate to drop me an email either if you are selling a vintage acoustic archtop, or if you're looking for one !
