ALSとは、筋萎縮性側索硬化症（きんいしゅくせいそくさくこうかしょう）という、体を動かす運動ニューロン（神経系）が変性し、徐々に壊れてしまう疾患。 運動ニューロンの変性によって筋肉への命令が伝わらなくなり、結果、筋力の低下を引き起こすが、意識や五感は正常のままで、知能の働きも低下することはない。 平均寿命3～5年と言われており、世界では120,000人、日本には9000人弱の患者がいる。 ALSの進行によって、手足の麻痺による運動障害、コミュニケーション障害、嚥下障害などの症状が起こり、最終的には呼吸障害を起こすため、延命のための人工呼吸器の装着が必要となる。 極めて進行が速いが、現在、治癒のための有効な治療法は確立されていない。 --- ALS is Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (often referred to as Lou Gehrig’s Disease) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. With the progressive degeneration of the motor neurons, the ability of the brain to initiate and control muscle movement is lost, while the intellect, consciousness and five senses remain fully intact. Average life expectancy is said to be 3-5years with 120,000 patients worldwide, and about 9,000 patients in Japan. Progression of symptom causes weakening and paralysis of arms and legs, difficulty in speech communication, swallowing or breathing, eventually requiring the use of respiratory support. ALS could be a fast progressing disease with no known established treatment methods at this time.
