Out of service railroad track reopening in 2025 - Newport, RI Over the past several years construction projects in Newport, Rhode Island have blocked rail access to the train station on America’s Cup Ave. Now the track is finally going to be put back in place by the Newport & Narragansett Bay Railroad for excursion trains that are planned to start running later this year. As part of the Pell Bridge ramp project a multi use path has been built along the railroad right of way from the Van Zandt overhead bridge south to the train station on Americas Cup Ave. To make room for the path, a track formerly known as the “East Track” was removed in June 2021. Despite the track removal, trains will return to Newport in 2025 after the “west track” is rebuilt. The west track, which ran parallel to the east track, was last used in 2016 which was the last season trains operated regularly out of Newport. It too was removed for the path construction so a completely new track is being built to restore train service. In addition to the track reconstruction along the bike path, the railroad crossing at Admiral Kalbfus has been replaced. This new crossing will allow trains to safely cross the busy roadway after they depart the Newport station and run north on the rebuilt tracks. The Newport & Narragansett Bay Railroad plans to operate a number of excursions out of Newport Station regularly but the Old Colony & Newport Railway is also looking to run here again. The nonprofit, all-volunteer organization has reorganized and even ran a couple of test trains last year in preparation for more regular operations. The group is utilizing borrowed equipment graciously loaned to them by the Newport & Narragansett Bay including Budd RDC coach BC-15. The Old Colony plans to operate various excursions and charters along different parts of the line including some trips on the restored track from Newport Station. To keep up with the Old Colony check them out on Facebook. The link to their page is in the video description. Newport & Narragansett Bay’s website links are also in the video description so be sure to check there when you want to buy tickets to ride the reopened track. Stay tuned for more updates on the south end of the Newport Secondary rail line as track restoration progresses.
