Drooling, panting, pacing, lethargy, yawning, lip licking… While it might not be the first thing you think of, these behaviors can all be signs of ANXIETY in dogs. Anxiety is not limited to any specific breed. Like people, any pup can be anxious, no matter their size, background, or living conditions. There is a laundry list of ways anxiety can present itself in your dog. Has he started to have accidents in the house even after being potty trained for years? Could be anxiety. Has she started ripping up the furniture when this hasn’t been a habit of hers since she was a puppy? Could be anxiety. How about constant barking or whining? Or OCD-type behaviors like excessive licking or spinning in circles? While some sassy side-eye from your dog can be cute, whale eye is a different story. Whale eye, sometimes accompanied by a cower or pinned back ears, can also often mean your pup is anxious. Think about it: Have you recently moved? Thrown a party? Hunkered down during a storm? Just like in humans, these events can cause anxiety in our pups. According to the Merck Veterinary Manual, the most common causes of dog anxiety are fear, separation, and aging. I wouldn't be too concerned if these symptoms are displayed after a one-off event and then taper off. However, if the behavior persists, consult with your veterinarian or a certified behavior consultant. Same goes for your pup displaying any aggressive or dangerous behavior… immediately contact a professional. Now on to the good stuff: some tips to alleviate your pup’s stress. As is always the case in dog training, most of the work has to actually be done to train the human, then training the dog can follow. In terms of preventative strategies for dog anxiety, take note of what seems to be the root cause for your pup. Is it separation? Loud noises? Then, take note of your dog’s body language. How is he showing you he’s uncomfortable? Every pup is different, and you know your pup best. If your pup is giving off all sorts of stress signals at the dog park, don’t go to the dog park! It’s not for everyone. If your dog starts whining when a bigger dog is approaching, turn around and walk away with your dog. Show your pup that you have their back by removing them from stressful environments. Until you have the tools to support them through - avoid triggering situations. Proper socialization is also key. This is particularly important with puppies; proper socialization during a puppy’s developmental stages is crucial for a dog’s wellbeing. Introducing them to new stimuli (new people, dogs, other animals, places, surfaces, sounds, etc.) helps them grow into a well-adjusted and balanced adult dog. I’ll include a link below to a video discussing puppy socialization in further detail. Training is another tool you have in your toolbelt. A good positive reinforcement trainer can work with you and your dog to help with anxiety. An anxious pup can be overwhelming, so remember that you do not have to tackle this alone. There is help available. Exercise and good nutrition are two other “treatments” worth noting for dog anxiety. Like humans, working out and eating well makes you feel and function better overall. Lastly, you can discuss medication, supplements, and/or holistic treatments like CBD with your vet, as they could be a good option for your pup.
