She allegedly poisoned her husband for the money. So where did the money go? On day seven of the Kouri Richins murder trial in Park City, Utah, prosecutors called forensic accountant Brooke Karrington — a thirty-year expert who reviewed hundreds of thousands of documents — to lay out the financial motive behind the alleged killing of Eric Richins. What the jury heard was methodical and damning. By March 2022, Kouri Richins carried $7.5 million in debt, was making $80,000 in monthly debt payments, and had four separate payday lenders she was paying $2,100 per day. Her business account was described under oath as "perpetually in the hole." She was writing checks to herself that bounced. In December 2021 alone, her accounts recorded 77 overdraft transactions. One day after Eric Richins died, she purchased a $2.9 million mansion in Midway, Utah. Seven days later, she listed it for sale. It foreclosed. The $1.35 million she collected from Eric's life insurance policies was entirely spent within three months. By September 2022, forensic records show she had roughly $800 left. The defense pushed back on cross-examination, arguing the financial evidence is speculative and proves nothing about the murder charge. Kouri Richins has pleaded not guilty and is presumed innocent until proven guilty. This is the prosecution's motive case — built in dollars and bank statements, and now in front of the jury.
