The Shankaracharya Tradition is considered to be the preeminent, undisputed, supreme knowledge element of Indian knowledge, philosophy, meditation techniques, and yoga. The kinds of mantras that are used, are referred to in a category known as "Bija" which in Sanskrit means a seed. The word mantra, "man" is mind, "tra" is a vehicle. So a Bija mantra, a seed, which is a mind vehicle. These sounds do not work on the level of meaning. They have no intended meaning. Although you learn it as a word, very quickly, when you begin to think the word, it becomes a sound in your mind. And you use that sound to take the mind from the gross, conscious, thinking layer, to the deeper layers of consciousness. The way that the Vedic Meditation mantras work, the Bija mantras work, is that with each thought of the mantra, as you repeat it mentally, the mantra becomes subtler, fainter, vaguer, finer. As it does so, it also increases in its intrinsic charm. The subtler layers of thinking, the subtler strata of the mind, are intrinsically more charming to experience, than the gross conscious thinking layer. As the mind begins to explore the charm, the ever-increasing charm, it follows the mantra effortlessly. Our mind always will follow without effort, anything that's more charming than what currently we're experiencing. So the mantra becomes more and more charming, more and more charming, as it becomes subtler and subtler, until eventually the mantra is so faint that it's almost imperceptible. That's when the mantra will disappear. And when the mantra disappears, it won't be replaced by a thought, because the mind, stepping beyond a certain layer of subtlety, experiences Transcendence. Transcendence is a term that describes a state of Being. Awake inside, pure awareness, without any thought-form. Consciousness is experiencing itself, consciousness is experiencing consciousness. And this supreme inner delight, this supreme contented state causes the mind, for a moment, to be completely uncurious about any other thing that could be more charming than that, because it's experiencing pure saturation of happiness. So the Bija mantras of Vedic Meditation work as a comfortable ride, to take the mind inward, to touch upon that least excited state. In Vedic Meditation there are different kinds of mantra groups that will serve different psychophysiological conditions, and different stages of life. And so then, in learning Vedic Meditation, a teacher uses the formula given by their Master, that comes from an ancient tradition, in choosing which mantra will be best for you. And this choice doesn't take hours. We don't have to sit around asking you questions about your childhood, or what kind of school you went to, and what upset you, and what made you happy. None of that is necessary. When you come to learn Vedic Meditation, all of the characteristics come with you, that we use to assess which mantra group you're in. And there are not billions of mantras, there are groups of mantras, and groups of people that are best served by those mantras. So it's the job of the Vedic Meditation teacher, at least in-part, to give to you the correct mantra or sound, which will produce successfully that subtle experience, and that transcendent experience that occurs in the Vedic Meditation technique. Of course the other part of the teacher's expertise, the larger part of it, is how to use the mantra correctly. Because even if you have the correct mantra, if you don't know how to use it properly, it's completely useless. And so having the knowledge of the mechanics of using it, and having the correct sound, very important, critical, pivotal to this practice. #thomknoles #vedicworldview #vedicmeditation
