This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Niccolò Machiavelli’s masterpiece, The Prince, is a guide for the unelected on how to gain and maintain power. Its unscrupulous principles gave rise to the use of the term ‘Machiavellian’ to mean devious and cunning. School councils exist in 95% of UK schools as a way to give young people a say and to teach them the value of democracy. The representatives on them are usually elected by their peers. So why would Machiavelli be kicking himself that he didn’t think of them first? As well as working directly with hundreds of UK schools Asher has conducted research and created toolkits for organisations including Parliament’s Education Service, the Children’s Commissioner and Peabody Housing Trust on promoting the participation of young people in their schools and communities. His work on student council development has taken him to Ireland, the Czech Republic, Poland and Pakistan .He is also very involved in school governance in Haringey as vice-chair of Welbourne Primary School and a member of the Schools Forum and Haringey Governors Association Executive Committee. About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
