A full, double length talky episode coming up, I've had a bad throat. Woke up with a squeaky voice on the day I set aside for filming. Hey Ho, but here's a bonus. Atmosphere as a 'riddum'. Here's my version pon di famous riddum 'Atmosphere' by Joy Division (I promise i'll stop using patois now). The vocals are from Jamaican vocalist Romie Ballen aka Ronnie Davis. I seperated them, chopped them and played a little. Here's the original song. It's called 'Please Stay (Don't Go). The lyrics are apposite. • Romie Ballen aka Ronnie Davis – Please Sta... All other recording credits go to yours truly. I've been practicing playing bass in this style. a deceptively simple one. As you probably know I'm doing a wide ranging series about Joy Division. That's taking a few twists and turns. One aspect, which is only tangential to them is reggae. As is well documented Ian Curtis loved reggae. I've produced this track paying close attention to the work of his hero Keith Hudson. That mix of melodious and dubbed out. Horace Andy is another obvious reference for that vocal style. Bunny Lee's production work is another area to explore. of all of these if you see that King Tubby or Lee Peery were involved somehow then all the better. That's how it is with Jamaican music at that time. Everyone worked with everyone at least once just about... So I've been doing a series on the connection between Jamaican music and Punk. The two rebel musics of the 1970s. Here's part 1 • How Jamaican and British Youth Created The... If you want more Joy Division in Dub here's 'Disorder': • JOY DIVISION BUT IT'S ROOTS REGGAE And 'She's lost control' • DUB LOST CONTROL. JOY DIVISION BUT IT'S RE... If you make dub, especially in Reaper, here's a tutorial I did a couple of years ago. Ask nicely and i might make another. I've learnt a couple of tricks since then. • Dirty Dub Done Dirt Cheap-Part One Frippertronics are very similar to Dub Echo, here's how to do it so it sounds like dying tape machine with free VSTs. • Frippertronics in REAPER (How to make your... As I say, the words of each song fit with the original theme (and of course I tuned the vocals to be in key). But I think the song 'Atmosphere' was particularly ripe for being made into a 'version'. For a start it's only three chords. the one four and five, doesn't get much simpler. That works well with dub echo effects. And that's what adds the, well, atmosphere. Yes, dub is all about the bass but it's the high frequencies that make the sound alive. I don't want to get all Mark Fisher on you but I think those fading echoes are really redolent of nostalgia. He'd have said hauntology. David Toop said similar things in his book 'Ocean of Sound' (great book). Enough of the theory though, this is probably the most emotional piece of music I've ever made. Thanks for reading, and subscribing. Take care out there. Don't go getting yourself a virus like I did.
