Onderstepoort farm is situated along the banks of the Orange River in Blouputs area of the Northern Cape, South Africa. Onderstepoort farm is part of three farming units in the greater Augrabies area, which has a unique microclimate, ideally suited to the growth of the popular early cultivars of seedless, sweet table grapes grown on the farm. Onderstepoort farm is located on the banks of the Orange river and the topography is generally flat with most of the developed table grape area situated along the river. The farm is used primarily to produce table grapes for export to Europe and is planted with the most popular seedless varieties currently available including Prime, Early Sweet and Sugra 13. There is currently 41.44 hectares of grapes in production all covered by hail nets. In addition the farm has 39.29 hectares of fallow land, that was previously planted to table grapes along the river bank. Onderstepoort farm is well irrigated, with sufficient water allocation to plant up to 120 hectares depending on the type of irrigation used. The farm also has the potential to produce a variety of different crops in addition to grapes, including citrus, dates and nuts. Plantings can be done in 4 different areas on the farm to spread the risk The normal water allocation/usage per ha is 109.80 hectares at a normal usage per hectare of 15,000 cubic meters per hectare per annum. This equates to 1,647,000,500 cubic meters per annum The farm has a good infrastructure with fit-for purpose farm buildings, management housing, worker housing and a pack house complex with equipment. The packhouse has its own cooling for table grapes which includes precooling, pack area cooling and cold rooms to do cooling up to specified protocols before the grapes are placed in holding rooms. The facility is big enough to pack 120 hectares of table grapes or citrus, dates and nuts. All infrastructure was set up to cater for the farm’s full potential. There is also a daycare/community centre that was built by the Waitrose foundation. With the current water allocation and efficient infrastructure, Onderstepoort farm has the potential for increased growth with a variety of crops and the development of something unique in the fruit growing industry.
