Marble Hall farm consists of 3 farming units in the Loskop Irrigation Scheme, near Marble Hall in the Limpopo province of South Africa. The farms are about 2 hours drive from Johannesburg and all exported fruit is shipped to Durban Harbour, which is approximately 700 km away. Due to the proximity to major local markets, the farming operation enjoys good local sales compared to farms in other areas. The farms are located in the summer rainfall area of South Africa and are unique as they have only about 500mm of annual rainfall. The area has enough heat in the early spring to be considered an early production area. The hot summer and a relatively short intense winter provide ideal conditions for early internal ripening and colour development. The majority of the crop produced is oranges with an equal distribution of soft citrus and lemons. The age distribution in cultivars is beneficial as most of the planted varieties are either in their prime or entering their prime production ages. The fruit the farm produces is ideally suited to marketing in the Middle and Far Eastern Regions of the world. The farms are enlisted under the Loskop Irrigation Scheme for a quota of 3 million m3 of water per year. As this is a state-declared irrigation scheme, the water supply is constant and the main catchment is the Highveld areas of Gauteng. The normal water usage per hectare is 7 700m3 and water allocation varies depending on the registered crop. The farm has a good infrastructure with fit-for-purpose farm buildings, management housing, worker housing and a packing shed with equipment that has the potential to pack more than one million cartons under favourable growing conditions.
