The Web-Footed Gecko ( Pachydactylus rangei ) lives in the soft sands of the Namib Desert and is specially adapted to living here. The wide and webbed feet give this gecko a large surface area to gain traction on the sand and also to allow them to build their burrows where they spend during the day. At night they emerge to feed on insects and spiders. It is known that this species of gecko glows in the dark, or at least glows when a UV light (black light) is shone on them. I test this out! The episode also features 2 other species (as part of my 3 GECKO CHALLENGE) that live in the Namib Desert but in slightly different habitats, across the gravel plains for the Giant Ground Gecko ( Chondrodactylus angulifer ) and then to a dry riverbed for the Common Barking Gecko ( Ptenopus garralus ). These species are also nocturnal and emerge from their burrows on nightfall to feed. The Barking gecko is particularly cool in the way the male calls or "barks" in order to attract the females to them!
