The Boyd's Rainforest Dragon ( Lophosaurus boydii ) lives in the rainforests of northern Australia. It perches on branches of trees where it waits for prey to come along during the day. They will jump down when suitable insect is near. They are beautiful lizards, with large nuchal crests that continue to run down along the spine, and have distinctive white cheek scales. They are known to be "thermo-conformers", which unlike most lizards that bask to regulate their temperature, these lizards fluctuate their body temp up and down with the ambient temperature under the canopy of the rainforest (where there is little sunlight). These lizards therefore match the environmental temperatures making them difficult to detect by the heat-seeking receptors of pythons, such as the jungle carpet python, also featured in this episode.
