The Boyds Forst Dragon is not only an ancient looking lizard, ones also one of the few reptile species we know that is directly threatened by global warming! Because of the dense rainforest these Australian lizards call home, these dragons don’t generally have access to direct sunlight in the wild to bask. Over time this has lead to them evolving their lifestyles to suit living under a dense canopy, as a result Boyds forest dragons practise thermoconforming rarther then actively thermoregulating, meaning the adapt their activities to suit the ambient temperature rarther then seeking out basking opportunities. While this works exceptionally well in their stable rainforest environment, it does mean that even a small change in temperature within their range could render their habitat unsuitable for them. Luckily the Boyd’s forest dragon is very well represented in captive populations throughout Australia due to their suitability as display animals and their attractive appearance.
