For some reason, I thought a solo Grand Canyon rim-to-rim-to-rim run in the middle of Winter would be a good idea. And for the most part it was...until the last three hours. American Express Gold Card offer (up to 90,000 points +$200 in statement credits!): https://americanexpress.com/en-us/ref... At 48 miles and ~11K vertical feet, this was the hardest mountain run I've ever done. I left my hotel at 5:15 am, ran ~3 miles to the South Kaibab trail head, then headed down S. Kaibab to the Colorado river, reaching Phantom Ranch around 9:30 am (filming the amazing morning views probably cost me an extra 2 hours). After a quick coffee and snack, I headed up the N. Kaibab trail, reaching the North Rim about 3:30 (2.5 hours later than I had originally hoped). On the way down, my hands got so cold I couldn't feel my fingers, so I stopped to warm them up and eat something, then kept heading down, hoping to get to Phantom Ranch by 7 in time for the hikers stew. I lost all daylight at 6 pm, and I finally reached Phantom Ranch at ~7:15 pm, missing the hikers stew, but right before they closed the store. The guy there gave me some hot chocolate and hot water for my freeze dried fettuccine alfredo, and a nice woman gave me a pair of hand warmers. At 7:45 I headed back across the Colorado River and up the Bright Angel trail, reaching the top about 12 am, cold and exhausted, but relieved. The last 1.5 miles to my hotel room was easy enough, but without GPS, I probably would have gotten lost! It certainly would have been ironic to get lost and freeze to death 1 mile from my hotel room after spending 19 hours running back and forth across the Grand Canyon. I'll soon be posting a follow up video covering how I planned and trained for this trip, as well as a review of what I did right and what I did wrong on this run. #rimtorimtorim #r2r2r #grandcanyonrun #rungrandcanyon Gear List: Shoes: Hoka Challenger ATR 5 Socks (outer): Thorlos Lite Running Mini-Crew Socks (inner): Injinji Trail Midweight Mini-Crew Poles: Black Diamond Distance Carbon FLZ Trekking Poles Microspikes: Snowline Chainsen Trail Running belt: Amphipod RunLite Xtech 4 Plus Hydration Belt Running vest: Ultimate Direction Adventure Vest Sunglasses: Pepper's Ricochet Shield Hat: Outdoor Research Sun Runner Cap Balaclava: Seirus Balaclava Beanie: REI Co-op Polartec Fleece Beanie Jacket: REI Co-op Groundbreaker Rain Jacket Fleece Shirt: Patagonia Micro D Fleece Pullover Gloves: Seirus Soundtouch Xtreme Stuff/Dry Sack: Zpacks Medium-Plus Stuff Sack Water bottle: Platypus Platy Water Bottle - 70 fl. oz.
