Hidden Giant of the Eastern Cape This is not Namibia. When I share videos and pics of this area people often insist that I must be confused and that this couldn't be South Africa. The Alexandria Dune Field stretches between the small towns of Colchester and Cannon Rocks - a vast, sea of sand that few outside the region even know exists. Once you’ve stood among its rolling dunes and walked through the Woody Cape, you can’t help but wonder how such beauty remains almost undiscovered. To my mind, the Alexandria Dune Field deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as Cape Town and the Drakensberg. The 90 km stretch between Colchester and Cannon Rocks takes you through some of South Africa’s most diverse landscapes, the Addo Elephant National Park, Sundays River, Golden Mile, Woody Cape and the dunes themselves. Here you’ll find everything from farm stays and houseboats to safari lodges and beach escapes. You can boat, sandboard, hike, take game drives (guided or self drive), or simply unwind on unspoiled beaches - one of the upsides of being almost completely off the radar.
