Arizona's Diablo Canyon is formidable, and the railroad bridge across it is spectacular! When the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad, predecessor of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad came to Diablo Canyon, they ordered a bridge from the east. When it arrived--it was too short. Six months were lost waiting for a new bridge. This bridge is the third to cross the canyon--but the piers and abutments from the original can still be seen. The trains are longer, heavier, faster--the this bridge is rock solid. Enjoy as we watch two fast freights run Diablo Canyon. The 'town' of Diablo Canyon came into existence when the construction stalled. It was a lawless place, and in one instance, a sheriff arrived in town one afternoon, and was buried in the evening. The building ruins are still there, but on the Indian Nation, so us your discretion. If I had a time machine I would dial it back to the 1940's and watch a couple of big 2900 class Northerns burn up the rails with troop trains. Man, whatta sight that would have been.
