Nuno Lopes won a Best Actor prize at Venice for his powerhouse portrayal of an unemployed ex-boxer who becomes a debt collector during Portugal's economic crisis. Saint George marks a winning reunion for director Marco Martins and Nuno Lopes, the star of Martins' Cannes award-winning Alice (2005). It's 2011, a year of extreme austerity and apocalyptic levels of public and private debt. Martins sets the scene with vivid images of Portugal in economic and social despair. Jorge (Lopes) is a penniless former boxer whose estranged wife is threatening to return to Brazil with their young son. His only option is to work for a debt collection agency that employs much more than polite persuasion to get results. Lopes delivers a memorable performance as a fighter who always left his aggression in the ring but must now find it, or risk losing everything. But after a spellbinding two hours spent in the company of Martins' beautiful film, starring Nuno Lopes and Mariana Nunes, São Jorge will hereafter only be known as a masterpiece, to yours truly.
