She is best known for the academy award winning portrayal of her by Kathy Bates in the 1990 film, Misery, where we're given a small glimpse at her history via newspaper headlines in a scrapbook, but in the novel, Annie's tale is far more involved. Welcome to Horror History, in today's lesson I'll be covering the entire life of Paul Sheldon's self-proclaimed number one fan, Annie Wilkes. From her birth in Bakersfield, CA in 1943, through her troubled childhood, her college years, her tear through the small town nursing jobs across the United States, her infamous indictment and her psychological duel with her favorite novelist, I'll be breaking down her psyche with an intellectual lens. For author Stephen King, Annie represents the embodiment of his craziest fans, so in order to fully understand the Dragon Lady, I'll be using what we know about a couple of illnesses of the mental variety: Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) and Celebrity Worship Syndrome (CWS). With this video I hope to help you understand why she acted the way she did, as well as what she represents in terms of "fandom culture" and how her story is still relevant today. This episode will cover the entire history of Annie Wilkes in Misery and Stephen King's writing. Please note that this will only analyse her character as it is written in the book.
