Renowned horror author Stephen King has created many characters who are writers over the years, like Jack Torrance, Bill Denbrough and many others. But perhaps the one who suffered more than any of them was Paul Sheldon. Paul was a successful author most known for a series of books called the Misery novels, but one day in 1987 after a life-threatening car accident, Paul was abducted by his number one fan: Annie Wilkes. He was tasked with trying to escape the confines of her house, which was not easy with broken legs and no contact with the outside world. In this video I'll be analysing the entire chronological life of Paul Sheldon, from his birth in 1945, to a possible run in with a character from IT, to his rise to fame in his adulthood and of course, his miserable five month stay in Sidewinder, CO at the home of Annie Wilkes and the torture (including the infamous hobbling scene!) that he endured during that time. I'll be offering my insight into what Misery is really about on a subtextual level, as well as breaking down the meaning behind many of Paul's choices, including his relationship with drugs and alcohol and what it all means for his character. I'll also go over the mind games he plays with Annie to try to give himself a fighting chance at survival, and I'll look at what she did to try to break him down, and the effects that these actions had on him psychologically. This will cover the entire known history of Paul from his birth, to his last known appearance at the end of Misery. Please note that this will only analyse his character as written in the book.
