Hans Engelmann (1872-1914) - not to be confused with the living composer Hans Ulrich Engelmann - was born in Berlin but emigrated to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania as a young man. He settled and married there, and embarked on an apparently prolific career as a composer of parlour and educational pieces. With this piece from 1903 he had reached Op. 600 at the age of 31, and although he died young, he had more than 800 numbered works to his credit. 'Mélodie d'amour' (Melody of Love) was a huge hit at the turn of the last century and beyond, and there may be viewers who can remember their grandmothers playing the piece! It was turned into a song at least twice, and achieved further fame in the 1940s under the guise of 'Whisper That You Love Me'. The main theme of this piece, though sentimental in the extreme, is strangely memorable.
