Ammonites are an extinct group of marine cephalopod mollusks that lived between 240 million and 65 million years ago. They were closely related to the modern nautilus and had a similar spiral-shaped shell. They went extinct along with the dinosaurs at the end of the Cretaceous period. Ammonite fossils are found all over the world, and they are often used by paleontologists to date rocks and other fossils in the fossil record. “The Lower Cretaceous of Resse is a geologically important formation that is exposed near the village of Resse in Germany. It consists of a series of mudstones and marls that were deposited in the early Lower Cretaceous period around 130 million years ago.” Image motif: Lower chalk from ResseOpens in a new window www.ap-h.de Lower Cretaceous of Resse The formation is rich in fossils, including ammonites, belemnites, sea urchins and mussels. These fossils allow paleontologists to reconstruct the environment in which the sediments were deposited. The Lower Cretaceous of Resse is also known for its well-preserved heteromorphic ammonites, which are a group of ammonites with unusual shapes.
