Today we’ll go over two different ways to say “finish” in Chinese: 完 (wán) = “to finish” 结束 (jié shù) = “to finish” We’ll first start with 完 完 is used with a verb, and is basically used to say you’ve “finished doing something” Pattern: [subject] + [verb] + 完了 [subject] finished [verbing] Note: There’s a 了 since once we’ve finished something, the action is completed Also note: 完 here is used as a result complement. We put it after a verb to indicate whether that verb was finished or not Examples: 1. 我吃完了 wǒ chī wán le I've finished eating 2. 我画完了 wǒ huà wán le I've finished drawing 3. 我跑完了 wǒ pǎo wán le I've finished running The pattern changes when we’re using a separable verb. A separable verb is a verb that’s made up of a verb and a noun. The pattern slightly changes since we now have to put 完 in between the verb and the noun [subject] + [verb] + 完 + [noun] 了 Example: Separable verb: 跑步 (pǎo bù) = “to run” 我跑完步了 wǒ pǎo wán bù le I've finished running Now let’s look at 结束 结束 is a verb, so we use it with a noun Pattern: [noun] + 结束了 means one (or more) of these 3 translations: [noun] has ended [noun] has finished [noun] is over Examples: 1. 电影结束了 diàn yǐng jié shù le The movie has ended 2. 暑假结束了 shǔ jià jié shù le Summer vacation is over 3. 开会结束了 kāi huì jié shù le The meeting has ended
