A 550-Pound Bear Under His House and the State Told Him to Wait

Ken Johnson did what Californians are told to do. He called the government and followed the rules. What he got instead was delay, restrictions, and weeks of inaction while a 550-pound black bear lived under his home. The bear caused serious damage, including to a gas line, forcing Johnson to shut off utilities and live without hot water through Christmas. Throughout it all, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife told him what he could not do while the danger remained. In the end, the state did not solve the problem. It was resolved in about 20 minutes by volunteers from the BEAR League. That raises an unavoidable question. Why did it take a nonprofit to do the job? Was this not Fish and Wildlife's responsibility? No homeowner should have to wait this long, live in fear, or watch their home be destroyed while agencies debate procedures.
