Onion is one of Pakistan’s most important vegetable crops, with an annual production of approximately 2 million metric tons. Pakistan ranks among the top 10 onion-producing countries and exports nearly 300 million US dollar worth of onions annually. Vietnam has emerged as a promising market, importing over 316,000 metric tons of onions annually, valued at 163 million US Dollar. China dominates with a 94% market share, followed by India and Myanmar. With the approval of Pakistan’s Pest Risk Analysis, the Vietnamese market is now officially open to Pakistani onion exports subject to compliance with Vietnams sanitary and phytosanitary protocols. To build awareness among stakeholders, P H D E C Hosted a Webinar on "Phyto Issuance Procedures for Onion Exports to Vietnam" Trade & Investment Attaché of Pakistan trade mission from Vietnam, provided a detailed overview of the Vietnamese onion market and highlighted the significant opportunities for Pakistani exporters for onion. She also offered support to exporters and committed to sharing a list of potential onion importers from Vietnam. Representative from Department of Plant Protection, delivered a comprehensive presentation on SPS requirements and procedures for obtaining a phytosanitary certificate. He stressed the need for Pakistani exporters to collaborate with notified importers in Vietnam holding valid import permits. Leading onion exporters & processors attended the webinar and applauded the opening of the onion market in Vietnam.
