Marvel: Cosmic Invasion is the newest beat 'em up from DotEmu and Tribute Games, the team that brought us TMNT Shredder's Revenge a few years ago. Shredder's Revenge was an excellent game, so I was looking forward to this from the moment it was announced. This time, since they had the Marvel license to work with, they took inspiration from Marvel vs. Capcom and included a tag mechanic that lets you swap between characters almost instantly to keep a constant combo barrage going. There was a demo earlier this year, and it got me excited for this game's potential, despite there being a few things to worry about. First off, there's a campaign with story scenes in between each stage. Every mission has two suggested characters to use, and three objectives to complete, usually involving the story characters. There's also a hidden cube item to find in every stage. The hidden cubes are also present in arcade mode, but they seem to do nothing. It would have nice if they had some effect, like working as a small heal or a timed buff, etc. But I digress. While playing through the campaign, it was fun trying out all the characters and figuring out who I liked, but when replaying it to finish objectives, I found myself getting bored. Campaign is locked to normal difficulty, and it's really easy. You can make tons of mistakes and slop your way through the game, so to me, that just makes it dull. I get why this should be the default difficulty for a huge, mainstream property like Marvel, but when everyone is forced to play that way, it can also leave a bad impression. Then there's Arcade mode. If you jump straight into it after loading up the game, there's no difficulty selection. If you've played the campaign, you can use tokens you've collected from completing mission objectives to unlock various things in the vault. Among them are modifiers for arcade mode, which are just like TMNT's dip switches. This is where you can increase the difficulty. I think this is a mistake because in TMNT you could just play on Hard right away, which makes the game a lot more fun. Why not just make Hard available by default, to show the player that yes, there are modifiers, and you can unlock more by playing the game? I think that would be better for everyone. So, onto the game. Hard made it fun to me. For starters, in arcade mode, you don't have extra lives. If one of your heroes dies, you have to wait until you find a large healing item to revive them, and most stages only have one. Health also doesn't recover between stages, so they made good balance choices here. The stages still aren't that difficult once you learn them, but just having to be aware of the dangerous enemies, prioritizing them, and trying to minimize damage taken makes the game far better than just mindlessly running through normal difficulty. The bosses are both the hardest, and worst part of the game imo. They're similar to TMNT in that they have situational hit stun, and typically just go about their patterns. They also have regenerating armor, some attacks that are unreactable (but maybe predictable?), and your evasion and movement isn't as strong as it was in TMNT, so a lot of the bosses just become annoying to fight. I really hated some of them at first, but I'll admit, my opinion is improving a little as I learn more about them. Or at least, they are getting less annoying. Team composition is interesting too because you have a few clear archetypes. Some characters can dodge, others just have a block/parry, some can fly and use long range attacks, others always have to get in close. I tried to put together a team that covers all bases, so I settled on Wolverine and Ghost Rider. I think Wolverine is hands down the strongest character in the game, and Ghost Rider is just the most fun parry character to me. I feel like this game does a lot right, and I'm glad they didn't regress from the extras they introduced in TMNT, like alt colors and modifiers. But ultimately, I just don't like this as much as TMNT. I can't really say why besides thinking TMNT has better bosses, and I just like the less chaotic, more methodical gameplay a bit more than this MvC style. But it's still fun, and it's pretty unique among beat 'em ups. Hell, maybe I just like the TMNT property more than Marvel. It's probably all a factor in feeling a little disappointed, but I did have high expectations. Maybe I'll change my mind as I play more, because ever since I started playing Arcade on Hard, I've been enjoying the game way more, and the more familiar I get with it, the more fun I have. For now, I'll just say it's a great game, and worth the $29.99 price tag if you want to dig into arcade mode.
