Well we're getting away from using terms such as custody and we're really focusing now on how do we allocate parental responsibilities. So, the allocation of parental responsibilities involves parenting time and decision-making for your children. The factors that we look at are what we call the best interest factors and a lot of them are pretty straightforward. The history of the child's relationship with either parent. The child's adjustment to their community. The child's interaction with other family members. Other factors too such as where is the child going to school? What parent can get the child to and from school based upon the child's schedule. The individual needs of that particular child, so we try to focus on the best interest of the child, and we also look at factors regarding allocation of decision making. Typically, joint decision-making is what we prefer unless there is some issue with drugs or mental health or alcohol. The feeling is that both parents should be able to make decisions jointly together about the best interest of their children and when people are able to work together it works so much better for the children in the long run. That reducing stress and conflict really helps in terms of the children and how they develop and progress. So come in and talk to me we can work out a parenting plan that fits your unique situation and is in the best interest of your child. Call to schedule a consultation today. (303) 329-3802.
